Family Lobbies For Nursing Home Reform

Updated: January 7, 2009
A family who lost an elderly relative from nursing home injuries is asking the Legislature for help in preventing future tragedies. Prosecutors say 81-year old Willie Mae Ryan was fatally beaten at the Dallas County Nursing Home home in Fordyce. Two nurses aides responsible for Ryan`s care were charged with capital murder. The family says more could have been done to prevent this tragedy and is asking the Legislature to look into it. "I know my mother wants this done for her and the other elderly people," says Gloria Leveritt, the daughter of the deceased. Ryan was blind and suffered from dementia. The family filed a lawsuit against the nursing home. The two nurses aides will be tried separately next year.
