State GOP Fined By Federal Election Commission

The Federal Election Commission says the Arkansas Republican Party committed eleven violations of federal campaign finance law and will be fined. State GOP director Mitchell Lowe says the errors were in the way the party filed its reports. The audit found, among other things, that the party misstated three measures in 1999 and 2000 -- overall contributions, spending and cash-on-hand. The audit found the party spent 331,021 dollars more than the law allowed in support of the 2000 campaign of Republican Jay Dickey. Dickey was unseated by Democrat Mike Ross in a close race for the 4th Congressional District seat. Both of the state`s major parties have been fined recently by the FEC.
