A logo being designed for a group that
promotes Bentonville may have to avoid depicting the city`s two
most recognized features -- a Confederate statue and the Wal-Mart
Visitors Center.
Main Street Bentonville board member Tom McCoy says Wal-Mart
would object to its image being coupled with a Confederate symbol.
Sam Walton`s first store, locally known as the Five and Dime, is
now the Visitors Center for Bentonville-based Wal-Mart, the world`s
largest retailer. It faces the city square of downtown Bentonville,
dominated by a sculpture of a Confederate soldier modeled after the
14th Governor of Arkansas, James H. Berry.
One alternative for the logo is to replace the visitors center
with the local courthouse.
