The state health department says an Arkansas
County resident has West Nile virus.
It`ss the second human case in Arkansas County this year and the
22nd in the state since January. Jefferson County has the most
confirmed human cases with seven.
Pulaski County has three human cases, Miller and Arkansas
counties have two and Benton, Cleburne, Columbia, Drew, Johnson,
Pope, Sevier and Union counties have one each.
The disease starts in birds and is transmitted to horses and
people by mosquitoes.
The mosquito-borne virus has been detected in humans, horses,
birds, or mosquito pools in these 48 counties: Arkansas, Ashley,
Benton, Bradley, Chicot, Clark, Clay, Cleburne, Cleveland,
Columbia, Craighead, Crawford, Conway, Dallas, Desha, Drew,
Faulkner, Franklin, Greene, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Independence,
Jefferson, Johnson, Lafayette, Lawrence, Lee, Little River, Logan,
Lonoke, Miller, Mississippi, Monroe, Newton, Phillips, Poinsett,
Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, Sebastian, Sevier, Scott, Stone,
Union, Van Buren, Washington and Woodruff.
