The office they work out of may look a little sterile, but the back room of the Saline County Prosecutor`s Office is really the nerve center of Project Compassion. The project is an expansion of the current county effort to reach out to crime victims with one victims` assistance coordinator. With almost 900 violent and domestic violence cases on the books during the last year Jill Carter was overwhelmed. Now in addition to her coordinator`s position, victims can count on the aid of a social worker and two social work interns. They walk families through the legal process, help the prosecutor with witness subpoenas and make arrangements for crime victims` reparations. The team has already been able to set up new domestic violence support groups at the Safe Haven shelter. Plans are also in the works to fundraise for Project Compassion so the work can continue even if the federal dollars that fund it dry up.
