Retired General Wesley Clark is moving
quickly to build a Hispanic support base.
The chairman of the Democratic National Committee`s Hispanic
Caucus expects Clark to be the only Democratic presidential
candidate to attend the group`s summit in Albuquerque this weekend.
Alvaro Cifuentes (SEE-fwen-tays) says Hispanics will be
attracted to Clark`s decorated military career. He says an
inordinate percentage of Hispanics serve in the military and
service is an important part of community life.
Hispanics are expected to become the nation`s largest minority
group this year.
Clark had Spanish-speaking volunteers working for him from the
very first day of his official campaign. One of those, Yosem
Companys of Menlo Park, California, says Clark speaks Spanish well.
Companys says Hispanics also appreciate Clark`s work as head of U-S
Southern Command in the 1980s.
Clark moved the Army portion to Puerto Rico.
