Confederate Group Upset About Lincoln Statue In Hot Springs

A rare bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln that a Hot Springs official calls a "treasure" is drawing criticism from a group that memorializes the Confederacy. The statue is cast from a model that was used for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D-C. The figure has been in Hot Springs for about 40 years, and is on display at the Hot Springs Civic and Convention Center. Steve Arrison, executive director of the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission, which oversees the convention center, says he doesn`t want to get in a fight over the statue. He says the vast majority of visitors to the center will appreciate the work. The leader of the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Loy Mauch of Bismarck, says he wants the statue to be removed. A Chicago businessman brought the statue to Hot Springs, where he spent his summers. The statue is believed to be one of fewer than a dozen scale replicas cast from the model of the statue in the nation`s capital by Daniel Chester French. Posted by Mike Hellgren
