Updated: January 7, 2009
On the day she was to go on trial, Sonya Kaye Jones admitted stealing more than 52-thousand dollars from Arkansas Tech University. She pleaded guilty today to numerous felony theft charges. In exchange, the prosecution dismissed 30 counts of forgery against the Yell County woman. Prosecutors plan to recommend a sentence that will allow Jones to return to her four children after a short time in prison. Prosecutor David Gibbons recommended that sentencing be delayed until October Sixth. Jones pleaded guilty to 35 counts of theft and four misdemeanor charges. Both sides agreed on a recommended sentence of two years in prison plus three years suspended. Under the agreement, Jones also would have to pay more than 52-thousand dollars in restitution to Arkansas Tech and three-thousand dollars to the state Legislative Audit Division.
