New Arkansas Quarter Debuts October 28th

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Arkansas quarter will debut October 28th. The coin will feature a diamond, a duck and rice -- all natural resources of the Natural State. The quarter will be unveiled at a ceremony at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro. The park was selected because a diamond is featured prominently in the quarter`s design. In October of 2002, Gov. Mike Huckabee announced that Dortha Scott, a 65-year-old grandmother from Mount Ida, was the winner of the state`s quarter design contest. Scott`s design included rice stalks, a diamond and a duck. Arkansas is the nation`s only diamond-producing state, one of the top rice producers and a prime duck-hunting area. The Arkansas quarter will be the 25th quarter released in the series of state quarters. The coins are being released in the order that states were admitted to the union.
