Record Rice

Updated: January 7, 2009
Arkansas rice farmers could harvest a record amount of rice this year as sunshine, rain and temperatures have combined for almost ideal rice-growing conditions. And with rice commanding prices much higher than last year`s, there could be some happy farmers in eastern Arkansas. Chuck Wilson is a rice specialist at the Rice Research and Extension Center in Stuttgart. He says the crop could be worth 741 (m) million dollars this year, eclipsing last year`s 348 (m) million dollars. The average rice price per hundredweight last year was three dollars and 60 cents. But prices shot up this spring and are now about eight dollars an acre. Wilson says the U-S-D`s early prediction for rice yield in Arkansas is almost 65-hundred pounds of rice per acre, though he`s not sure himself that it will reach that level. If it does, that would be 10 pounds more per acre than last year`s record yield.
