Danger on the Tracks

For years, it was Conway`s dangerous distinction: one of the highest rates of train-related traffic accidents in the country. Safety on the tracks is getting better, but Conway police say there`s plenty of room for improvement. "A car versus a train is equivalent to a semi-truck versus an aluminum can," says Conway Major Bill Milburn. Richie Glover, who works just off the tracks, say it`s a warning many drivers don`t heed. "They don`t pay attention to the arms coming down," he says. "We get a lot of people just trying to rush." It`s why Conway Police are upping patrols around crossings and reminding drivers what could happen if they`re careless. Major Milburn says he`s seen the results and that saving a few minutes waiting for a train is nothing compared to saving your life. "The train, sure, it`s large," he explains. "It appears to be going slower than it is, and they think they can beat it. They put two minutes waiting on a train ahead of their lives in some instances."
