A beautification effort borne of the 1997 tornado that ripped through Arkadelphia is working its way toward completion. The $635,000 first phase of the project is bringing new sidewalks, decorative shrubbery and lighting to an area of downtown. Homes and businesses in the city were destroyed by the tornado, an F-4 on the Fujita scale. Six people died Arkadelphia in the March First, 1997, tornado. Workers have run into a few snags. Old pipes and storage tanks were found. One tank was thought to have been from a service station that did business in the early 1900s. Officials say they hope the work will be complete by late November, in time for the holiday shopping season.
