The Libertarian Party of Arkansas (LPAR) is making moves to form a new political party in the Natural State and have its candidates appear on the 2012 ballot.

Secretary of State Mark Martin today received petitions submitted on behalf of the party.

State law allows any group wishing to form a new political party to do so by submitting a petition to the Secretary of State. The petition must contain the signatures of at least 10,000 registered voters.

The Libertarians said today their petition held a total of 16,144 signatures.

The Secretary of State's office has 30 days to verify that the signatures are from registered Arkansas voters.
