Fidelity Investments says the plans are becoming healthier with balances reaching a 12-year high.
The average balance climbed to 74-thousand-900 dollars at the end of the first quarter.
That's a 12-percent increase from last year and an indication of market gains.
Fidelity's Beth McHugh also notes people have increased their contributions by three-and-a-half percent in the first quarter.
