One of the state's two main government bodies that oversees the Arkansas lottery is recommending cuts to scholarship awards.

The Lottery Scholarship Oversight Committee is calling for awards to 4-year students be reduced from $5,000 to $4,500 and for junior college students from $2,500 to $2,250.

The recommendation must be approved by the Arkansas Lottery Commission before taking effect.

I am a fan of the lottery in Arkansas, however, I don't think I or other Arkansans would have ever approved this had we known that the scholarship amounts would be so low. Do the math and it is obvious that most of this money is tied up in bureaucracy and administrative cost. We owe our kids better than that. The current scholarship amounts only covers a portion of costs at most schools. Lowering it is an insult to students and Arkansans. We should be doing everything we can to make our state and our students better and more competitive in the world. Give me a break!
