Updated: January 27, 2011
More people filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week.

The Labor Department says 454-thousand people filed initial claims in the week ending January 22nd.

That's an increase of 51-thousand claims from the previous week.

In the week ending January 15th, there were just under four-million claims for unemployment benefits filed, including continuing claims.

New York reported the largest drop in initial claims for that week.

It credited the drop to fewer layoffs in the construction, service and transportation industries.

The largest increase was seen in Florida.
