The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah was ushered in across from the White House with the traditional lighting of the National Menorah in Washington, DC, Wednesday.

With renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and the U.S. Navy Band performing, the National Menorah's first candle was lit Wednesday.

The National Menorah Council hosted the event marking the first night of the eight-day celebration.

The National Menorah is located across the street from the White House, a short distance from the National Christmas Tree that will be lit December 9th.
