Keeping kids safe, to and from school, is the goal of a program called "Safe Routes to School".

The program allows community leaders, schools and parents to improve safety and encourage more kids to safely walk and bike to school.

For example, Forest Park Elementary in Little Rock completed a project last year, adding sidewalks on streets around the school. In addition, speed detectors were added to remind drivers to slow down.

"We want to encourage all the communities that are interested in that..There's a value of going through the planning process so that you can identify these routes to get your kids to school safely."

Applications for the grants are due by the end of October.
