Bigger jackpots will make the Arkansas Lottery more attractive to residents living in towns that border other states.

That's what the State Lottery Director told a meeting of the Political Animals Club in Little Rock today.

When questions were raised about marketing in low income areas, Ernie Passailaigue told the crowd there would be no targeting or racial profiling in the lottery's ad campaigns.

Lottery officials have said ticket sales are expected to amount to a $400 million-a-year business for the Natural State.

The lottery is expected to employ around 80 people once it's up and running. On its website today, the lottery commission has 35 job listings (click here to view jobs). Lottery officials have said a huge number of applications continue to roll in.

Passailaigue has come under fire since taking the director's job because of his $300K+ salary and the six-figure salaries of other recent hires. He says salaries for all lottery jobs will total under $5 million a year.

He defended his hiring decisions today, saying "you have to bring in expertise."
