8:43 a.m. - Madonna Asks Fans to Support Malawi School

By: RNS
Updated: November 15, 2008

Singer Madonna wants to build a girls school in Malawi for underprivileged children and wants her fans to help.

She's asking fans to donate money to the proposed project.  She explains why she wants to build the school in a video posted on her website.

She says that few girls in Africa in general are encouraged or allowed to attend a secondary school. She goes on to say that she'd appreciate involvement by her fans, whether it be monetary or spreading the word about her idea.

Madonna calls her project "The Raising Malawi Academy for Girls." She officially adopted a young Malawian boy in May.
