We really enjoyed this rental. It is a very witty comedy featuring one of today's best actresses Frances McDormand and the very promising up and coming Amy Adams. This is an old fashioned comedy centered on dialog, timing, and situation. It is set in the late 30s, early 40s on the cusp of WWII in England. While the older characters are aware of what is going on around them and are still reeling a bit from their losses in WWI, the young are living for the day and try to avoid the thought of what is coming.
McDormand plays a down on her luck governess who finds herself the social secretary for a young and confused actress/singer, Delysia Lafosse(Amy Adams), who needs help navigating her love life. Miss Guinevere Pettigrew is the perfect person for the job. She has known true love and heartbreak. She immediately knows which path Delysia should take and along the way finds a new love and repairs her own broken heart.
The art direction, music and cinematography are wonderful. The costumes and sets are lovely. The jazz is fantastic throughout the movie. It sets a perfect feel for the story and of course was the music of the youth for that time.
Overall, a very well done picture for adults that does not pretend to be anything it is not. It was very nice to see women with such strong roles and so successfully played.
This movie is not for kids.
