Safety Matters: Cable Barriers Proving Worth The Investment

A multi-million dollar project along Interstate 540 saves lives.

Cable barriers were installed along a portion of Interstate 540 from Fayetteville to Bentonville last summer.

And officials say the barriers have already been hit more than 70 times in the last six months.

Dick Trammel of the Arkansas State Highway Commission says,

"We've already spent about $50,000 for repairs on the barrier.  It has been hit 70 times, I'm going to guess we've saved 5 or 6 lives and it's worth every penny of it."

The 28 miles of barriers rang in around $5.1 million.

These cable barriers do save lives! They saved mine on 67/167 just south of Cabot. I was traveling south on my way to work one morning when a car came from the east service road, crossed the northbound lanes of 67, went into the median, and hit the barrier. Luckily, the barrier stopped the car. Otherwise, that car would have hit me. I've never been so grateful for a little wire fence! These barriers are money well spent!
