Burn Site Approved in Saline County for Storm Debris, Public Dropoffs Welcome

Saline County is all set to get rid of debris from last week's big winter storm that knocked down many trees and limbs.

Benton Mayor David Mattingly said in a news release today that he's been told by County Judge Larry Fite that the state has approved a burn site behind the new airport off Reynolds Road.

Signs are being posted to lead citizens to the location. The burn site will be open to the public Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be manned by county employees.

Mayor Mattingly says citizens who have the ability to clean-up and haul debris from their property are welcome to take it directly to the burn site during the hours of operation. Others who do not have the means to haul to the site are encouraged to begin bringing debris curbside for easier pickup and removal.

City and county employees cannot go onto private property to help cut and remove debris, Mayor Mattingly says, adding "we are reassigning as many employees as possible to facilitate the massive clean-up problem. Please be patient, it will take several weeks to get this accomplished."

To report debris to be picked up curbside, call the City of Benton Street Department at (501) 776-5990 or City Hall at (501) 776-5900. If your debris is located in the utility right of way, you should contact Benton Public Utilities at (501) 776-5930 for directions on how to proceed.

Anyone who has suffered damage to their home or other personal property, should contact the Saline County Office of Emergency Management at (501) 303-5649 to file a report.
