Carter's parents reportedly asked Reverend Jackson to prepare an appeal to the Department of Justice to ask that the civil rights division launch an immediate independent investigation into the events surrounding his death at the end of July.
"I am alarmed by the nature in which the investigation was handled as well as the explanations given how allegedly Chavis took his life. There are too many unanswered questions and Chavis parents need and deserve closure," according to Rev. Jackson.
Rev. Jackson will appear at 11 o'clock this morning at Monumental Baptist Church in Memphis. He will also lead the family in a prayer vigil at five o'clock tonight at 1214 Haltom Street, the location where Carter was arrested in Jonesboro
Jonesboro Police say Carter shot himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car.
