Ryan Longood, 14, has battled a rare condition that causes facial disfigurement for years.

Dr. James Suen, a head and neck surgeon at UAMS, is leading a research team that has replicated the disorder in lab mice. That's a major step in finding better treatments and a possible cure. The disorder occurs because of something that happens before birth but is not inherited.

KARK welcomed one of Ryan's doctors, Dr. John Pemberton, to discuss his treatment and what's next for Ryan.
