Stories Needed from Benton, Bryant for "Tales from the South"

Updated: May 22, 2012
Do you know a great story about someone from or living in Benton or Bryant?

If so, the award-winning National Public Radio show "Tales from the South" wants to see it.

They are looking for true stories to be shared at their first "On the Road" show in Benton next month.

Stories must be true and told in the first person--recounting things that happened to the writer, not someone else, and they must be literary memoirs--not editorials, poems, top-ten lists, essays, or general statements of personal belief.

There must be a clear narrative structure (not just chronologies: something must happen) with rising action building to a climax/epiphany. The topic for this show is open. Tales staff will help with the editing of the story.

If accepted, writers must read their own stories and be available to record in front of a live audience at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Benton on the evening of Wednesday, June 13th.

Stories must be between 500-1,200 words. Stories are chosen based on what is best suited for this special show and the timing requirements. Stories that are not chosen for this show may be filed as regular submissions for the weekly show at Starving Artist Caf in North Little Rock.

Submission deadline is 10PM Sunday, May 27th.

Click here for full submission guidelines.

Tickets are $5 for the show, which includes dinner provided by Benton FUMC. Seating is limited. Tickets can be bought online, click here.

"Tales from the South" is recorded on Tuesdays during "Dinner and a Show" at Starving Artist Caf.

The show airs locally on KUAR Thursdays at 7PM and is syndicated by World Radio Network, a satellite radio distribution service, available to more than 130 million listeners worldwide. Shows are also distributed nationwide to multiple public radio stations by PRX (Public Radio Exchange) and heard on Public Radio Remix on XM Satellite Radio.
