Update with new details (Thursday, 2:30 p.m.):

A teacher found the gun in the student's backpack, took the backpack from him and called for the principal, who called the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy who was first on the scene said the gun's hammer was cocked and ready to fire.

The child's father came to the school and was reported to have been very shaken by the incident. The man told deputies that the gun was in a drawer in his gun cabinet, that was supposed to be locked and he did not know when his son took the gun out.

When deputies asked the boy why he brought the gun to school, he answered "I want to play Cowboys and Indians with my friends," according to the incident report.

The boy also told deputies he wanted to show the gun to his friends and the only person that he showed the gun to was one friend who then told the teacher. The child appeared to be very upset that the teacher was told and felt his friend betrayed him.  When asked if it was right to bring a gun to school?, the child answered "No, I just wanted to show my friends," then said he was sorry that he brought the gun to school.

The principal said recommended disciplinary action against the child would be expulsion.

The gun was described as a gold-plated Fratelli .22 revolver.

Update (Thursday, 9:40 a.m.):

The child who brought the gun to school is an 8-year-old.

Original Story (Thursday, 8:30 a.m.):

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a second grader brought a loaded .22 revolver to Daisy Bates Elementary School today.

Deputies were called to the scene on Dineen Drive off 145th Street around eight o'clock.

The PCSO says the child is a 7-year-old boy. He cannot be charged with anything under state law because he is under the age of 10.
