The
Arkansas State Red Wolves suffered their first weekend series loss
of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 10-1 in the deciding game of a
three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Monroe at Tomlinson
Stadium and Kell Field.
Arkansas
State opened the series with a 7-6 victory Friday night before ULM
evened the count with
a 9-0 win in Saturday's outing. The Red Wolves dropped to 18-15 overall
with the loss, and remain in second place in the league standings at
8-4 in SBC action. ULM improved to 16-15 on the season and 4-8 in SBC
action.
The Warhawks scored once in the second and once in the third, then padded their lead with four
runs in the fourth to go up 6-0 before ASU scored its lone run in the fourth.
Louisiana-Monroe
took advantage of the first of three ASU errors to plate an unearned
run in the
second, then made it 2-0 in the third when left fielder Les Aulds walked
and eventually scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single from third
baseman Judd Edwards got the Warhawks going in the fourth. Aulds drove
in the second run with a base hit and scored on
a balk later in the inning, and shortstop Jeremy Sy singled up the
middle to drive in the final run of the frame for ULM.
Arkansas
State answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when left fielder
Logan Uxa singled,
then scored later in the inning when shortstop Dustin Jones drew a
bases-loaded walk, but ULM added four more runs in the seventh and the
Red Wolves did not threaten again.
Senior
Cory Kyle (2-3) gave up four runs on two hits, walked five and struck
out three to take
the loss in three innings on the mound. Reliever Kendall Thamm pitched
the final five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win for ULM. Thamm
gave up no runs on just one hit, struck out a pair and walked two.
Third baseman Claude Johnson was 2-for-4 to lead ASU at the plate, while Edwards was 2-for-4 with
three RBIs to lead ULM.
Arkansas State will return to action Tuesday, April 10, when they host the Memphis Tigers in a
6:30 p.m. game.
