Two homes have been destroyed by fire in Mayflower.

Deputies say initial 9-1-1 calls Sunday afternoon informed them that a home at 52 Mallard Cove was on fire. Additional callers said the home next door was also burning.

Fire crews from several different agencies spent hours on the scene Sunday afternoon getting the blaze under control..

A third home was saved by firefighters.

The thick smoke from the scene was visible for miles.

"I'd been grilling all morning and I was coming in and out of the house every 15 minutes and at about two o'clock it was just a big flame," says one neighbor about the fire.

Others saw it too and immediately called for help.

"I ran down there to make sure my neighbors were okay, make sure everybody got out of the house," says a neighbor.

Nearby woods also caught fire as crews battled the flames and people had to be kept out of the area for their own safety.

One major challenge to fighting the fire was bringing in water by tanker truck and another obstacle was not having enough firefighters to handle the flames.

"I think they called Cato, the neighboring town. I think another neighboring town came cause we ran out of water," a neighbor says.

We are told everyone was able to get out of the homes safely and no injuries have been reported. Deputies, though, say a few animals were inside.

There is no official word on total damages right now.
