With Veterans Day earlier this month, we here at KARK have been honoring vets all month long.  In our Money Matters report, we have some financial advice specifically for men and woman who served or are currently serving our country.

If you're a veteran, there are some great opportunities just for you to invest and save money.

We sat down with KARK'S resident financial guru Gary Garrison.  He recommends a thrift savings plan or TSP.

"It's a lot like a corporate 401k, where there are tax advantages and investment opportunities," said Garrison.

"They've got a lot to choose from.  We just always recommend as they get close to retirement, they understand how much risk they're taking and make plans to roll that over to a personal IRA."

Garrison also recommends veterans educate themselves.  You can't take advantage of certain opportunities unless you know about them.

"There are a lot of education benefits available to veterans," said Garrison.  "And we recommend going to www.va.gov to learn all types of benefits and available programs that they're entitled to."

Some good advice for veterans and all of us- keep those beneficiaries up to date and be sure to select a good adviser to help you with your money matters.
