Is Leaving Your Pet In The Car During Summer A Felony?

By: Jocelyn Tovar, KARK 4 NEWS

It's been one year since a law making animal cruelty a felony took effect in the state of Arkansas.

As temperatures begin to raise you have to remember leaving pets in your car during errands, even for just a few minutes, can have deadly consequences.

However there is a difference between that type of negligence and the aggravated animal cruelty you can serve time for.

"Which means it was intentional," said Kay Simpson the animal cruelty investigator for the Pulaski County Humane Society. "Or you watched it happening and did nothing about it. It would be a misdemeanor on the heat stroke and of course if someone's done it several times, then there's a pattern there."

Simpson said if you do leave an animal in a hot vehicle repeatedly felony charges could then possibly follow.
