  • ASU Tops Henderson State 80-61 in First Exhibition Game
    Reported by: KARK 4 Sports

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @09:30am CST

Three players scored in double figures, including sophomore Daniel Bryant with a game-high 19 points, to lead the Arkansas State men’s basketball team to an 80-61 victory over Henderson State Thursday night at the Convocation Center in the Red Wolves first exhibition game of the season.

Bryant came off the bench to connect on 7-of-14 attempts from the field, including four 3-point field goals, and scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. Senior guard Donald Boone and freshman Brandon Peterson each added 10 points to join Bryant in double digits. Nine ASU players finished the game with at least five points and 10 players saw action, including nine that played at least 15 minutes.

The Red Wolves hit 57-percent of their shots while holding the Reddies to 32-percent shooting in the first half to grab a 48-28 advantage at the break. Boone, who played just four minutes in the second half, scored all of his 10 points over the first 20 minutes to help ASU grab a 20-point lead by halftime.

Leading 17-15 with 11:48 remaining in the first half, ASU went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 29-15 lead and didn’t let Henderson State get any closer than nine points the rest of the way. ASU led by double figures the entire second half, taking its largest lead of the game at 50-28 when senior forward JeJuan Brown hit a lay-up on ASU’s first possession of the half.

“We need some consistency -- we had some moments of pretty good play and moments of not-so-good play,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “But I attribute that to eight new guys, three and four freshman on the floor at some points. I was very pleased with some of the things our new players did. I wasn’t as pleased with our returning players and the way they started the game. Overall, it was good to go through it and now we just need to grow and get better from it.”

ASU finished with a .508 shooting percentage to Henderson State’s .375 and outrebounded the Reddies 43-36.  Peterson and Brown led ASU with eight rebounds each. ASU also blocked 17 shots, led by Peterson with seven, and posted eight steals. Junior guard Rashad Allison and freshman guard Trey Finn dished out a team-high six assists each as ASU finished with 20 assists as a team.

The Red Wolves will play their second and final exhibition game Monday, Nov. 9 against Ouachita Baptist at the Convocation Center at 7:05 p.m.
