Reported by: KARK 4 Sports Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @09:00am CST The Arkansas State women’s golf team had three players finish among the top-15 individual leaders at the UAB Fall Beach Blast, leading the Red Wolves to a combined score of 606 that placed them tied for third in the final standings for the two-round tournament that concluded Tuesday.
ASU finished Monday’s opening round tied for fourth place after shooting a 306, but cut six strokes off that total in today’s second round to move up one place in the final standings. The Red Wolves tied Louisiana-Monroe and finished just one stroke behind second-place Samford, while Memphis claimed the tournament title with a 595. ASU’s second-round 300 was its second lowest single-round score of the season, just behind its 295 posted in its season-opening tournament. Competing in their sixth tournament of the season, the Red Wolves collected their second consecutive top-3 finish and third of the season. “I am very proud of the team this week,” said ASU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. “We finished strong with the 300 today. The greens were very big and very fast. If you didn't hit near the hole it was a significant challenge to get down in two.” The Red Wolves finished ahead of Middle Tennessee (612), Marshall (615), Belmont (618), UAB (620), South Alabama (626), Southern Miss (626), Austin Peay (638) and Tennessee Tech (649). ASU freshman Anna Carling posted her top finish of the season, placing tied for sixth with a combined 149 (76-73). Carling shot a second-round 73 that was the lowest of her young career and recorded her third top-25 finish. Joining Carling in the top-10 individual standings was senior Cassie Huffer, who shot a 151 (77-74) to finish in 10th place. Huffer picked up her second top-10 finish and has now completed every tournament this season in the top 25. Sophomore Jennifer Welch followed in a tie for 11th place with a 152 (78-74), marking the fifth time this year she has finished in the top 15. Junior Adrian Sportsman shot a 156 (75-81) to finish tied for 31st place and freshman Jennifer Loiacano finished tied for 45th place with a 160 (81-79). The tournament ended the fall season for ASU, which next competes at the Stripes Islander Classic Feb. 28 - Mar. 2. “With such a successful fall, I feel the spring will be even better,” said Brown-Lemm.
