  • Missouri Now Taxes Yoga
    Reported by: Newsroom Solutions

    Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @07:20am CST

The state of Missouri has become the only state to enforce a sales tax on yoga.

The move comes as Missouri looks for alternative sources of revenue to prop sagging state budgets.

Missouri Department of Revenue officials argue the state Supreme Court has ruled athletic and fitness clubs are places of recreation and fees paid to those kinds of business are considered taxable.

Yoga teachers opposed to the new four-percent sales tax say they do not provide recreation, but a physical preparation for meditation.
