Saturday, Nov 21, 2009 @12:41pm CST (Seoul, South Korea) -- President Obama says he will "go anywhere" to get the U.S. economy back on track. He made that statement in his weekly radio and internet address as he summed up his just ended Asian trip. He said Asia is a region where the U.S. buys more goods and does more trading than anywhere else in the world. The President added the region is a place "where the risk of a nuclear arms race threatens our security and where extremists plan attacks on America's soil." The President said his trip to Japan, China and South Korea was designed to open "a new era of American engagement."
Obama talked of accomplishments achieved during his trip; sending a unified message to Iran and North Korea that they either give up their nuclear weapons or face the consequences; and getting a host of new clean energy initiatives established with China." He said the two countries agreed to work for a successful result at the upcoming climate summit in Copenhagen. The President said the primary thrust of his trip was to talk about solutions for attaining economic recovery, to "bring back jobs and prosperity for our people." He summed up lessons being learned from the recession, saying quote, "we can't return to a situation where America's economic growth is fueled by consumers who take on more and more debt. In order to keep growing, we need to spend less, save more and get our federal deficit under control." Obama reminded his listeners the administration will host a White House forum in the next few weeks on jobs and economic growth, tapping expertise from several disciplines about what can be done to spur hiring and get the economy moving again.
