Reported by: KARK 4 News Friday, Nov 20, 2009 @08:30am CST Smoke will rise over Fort Chaffee in northwest Arkansas this morning, but there's no cause for alarm.
It's all part of a training exercise for the installation's fire and rescue personnel involving a controlled burn of a building already slated to be demolished. It happens this morning at ten o'clock. The training will involve a dilapidated structure that is no longer being used, and was scheduled to be torn down. In preparation for the event, the post's facilities maintenance and environmental offices have cleared the building of all hazardous and recyclable materials. According to Todd Bolton, chief of Fort Chaffee PSD, during the training exercise a fire will be ignited inside of the building and the Fort Chaffee Fire Department will respond. This real world training will provide the chief and facility manager an opportunity to verify response times and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures for the Public Safety Department with regards to fire fighting operations. The Fort Chaffee PSD has coordinated the training exercise with all neighboring local fire departments to let them know the event is not an actual emergency, and has taken precautions to protect other adjacent buildings from possible damage. |
