Reported by: KARK 4 News Friday, Nov 20, 2009 @03:20pm CST (Garland County, AR) The Garland County Sheriff's Department has wrapped up a short news conference this afternoon to brief the media on details about a shootout Thursday night and to release information about the three suspects in five murders.
Deputies say one of them, Marvin Stringer, 22, was killed in the barrage of gunfire in Hot Springs. They also revealed that only one officer suffered a gunshot wound, and not two as first thought. Deputy Jason Lawrence is in serious but stable condition this afternoon. The other deputy, Felix Hunter, needed treatment for a "medical issue" after the shootout, and was released a short time later. Two other suspects are charged in the case. Jeremy Pickney, 23, and Samuel Conway, 23, are both in jail on no bond. They are charged with capital murder, aggravated residential burglary and arson for the deaths of five people in the small town of Pearcy on November 12. All five had been shot, and the home where four were found had been burned to the ground. Stringer died in Thursday night's shootout at the National Park Inn in Hot Springs after deputies say Stringer opened fire as officers arrived with a warrant. Conway and Pickney were arrested later. Arkansas State Police, Hot Springs Police, the F.B.I., and the U.S. Marshal's Service assisted with the investigation. In the Pearcy killings, the remains of four of the victims were found inside their burned home on Old Airport Road just down the street from the Lake Hamilton school. The fifth victim was found inside his home located nearby on the same property. [See photos below]. A truck registered to the victims' address was found on fire miles away in Hot Springs, minutes before the house fire was reported. Also at today's news conference, the Sheriff's Office revealed that a gag order was in place over the case and that no further details would be released. Only one other bit of information was given regarding property stolen during the burglary in Pearcy. The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information about that property to call them at (501) 622-3690 or the anonymous tips line at (501) 622-3674. ![]() |
