  • Another Shocker in Women's Health?
    Reported by: Newsroom Solutions

    Friday, Nov 20, 2009 @07:00am CST

On the heels of controversy about when women should get mammograms, come new guidelines for cervical cancer screenings.

Doctors with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now say women should wait until age 21 to get their first Pap smear, and women under 30 should to get screened every two years, rather than annually.

The panel says women over 30 should get Pap smears every three years.

The new guidelines are based on studies that show screening women under 21 can lead to complications with pregnancies later in life.

The panel stresses that women still need regular Pap smears even though the guidelines have changed.

The new guidelines say women in their 40s shouldn't get routine mammograms for diagnosis of breast cancer.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is facing a backlash over new guidelines recommending a sharp reduction in the number of mammograms done in the U.S.

The group said earlier this week that most women under the age of 50 do not need mammograms, and those over 50 only need them once every other year.

The American Cancer Society has said it will continue to recommend that women get yearly mammograms starting at age 40.
