Reported by: Melissa Simas Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @04:01pm CST Personal property and business taxes in Pulaski County were due by October 13th. According to the county Treasurer's office, almost 61,000 people, and 2,200 businesses still owe taxes. As of the deadline, the county received $331,531,000, but they're still short roughly 32 million. The tax money is dispursed to 18 different entities in the state, including schools and libraries.
"For the businesses, if you will pay now it will save them money, because we're fixin to file their writs, and sooner or later we're going to come get their assets," said Pulaski County Chief Deputy Treasurer Debbye Walter. "And just taxes not being paid, there are things that go undone. The schools aren't getting the money, and that's about 80 percent of where tax dollars go -- to the schools." For those who have not paid their taxes, there will be a penalty of 10%. |
