Thursday, Oct 29, 2009 @04:30pm CDT The popular tax credit for first-time homebuyers that has led to millions in housing sales could be extended.
"This extension will get us through the winter...the worst time for real estate and jump start home sales into the summer season of 2010." The U.S. Senate is expected to take up the issue soon -- to extend the program thru April. Right now, it's set to expire November 30th. The $8,000 dollar tax credit for first-time homebuyers was used in over 1.4-million home sales in the past year. However, critics say there's been widespread abuse of the program. Last week, it was reported that 19- thousand taxpayers claimed the credit, but hadn't bought a home. Others have used their child's name to try to get the money. |
