  • Pasta Party Kicks off Race for the Cure
Reported by: Lauren Trager, KARK 4 News

    Friday, Oct 16, 2009 @09:07pm CDT

The 16th annual Race for the Cure is now less than 12 hours away.

So far, over 45,000 people have registered to support the Susan G. Komen foundation and the fight against breast cancer.

Tonight, hundreds geared up for tomorrow's race at the annual Pasta Party.

Over 1,200 people attended the Race for the Cure's Pasta Party at Dickey Stevens Park Friday night.

Held at the ball park for the first time to accommodate more people, there was music and dancing, families and friends sitting down for a filling meal-loading up on carbohydrates for tomorrow's race.

But everywhere there were stories, like Ashlee Stephens'.

"I did not think I would be one of them, I sure did not," Stephens said.

Stephens started racing the year the program began in Arkansas. But last year, everything changed.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Being a part of it for so long, it kind of helped, just getting to go down there and be a part with all those women. But then when I was a survivor and wearing that pink T-shirt, it really did, it hit home for me," she said.

She says she wanted to bring her daughters to the Pasta Party to show what can happen when so many people unite.

"Women, when they get something in their mind, they're going to do it, so its just amazing to see all these women out here for one main cause," she said.

And tomorrow, her husband Gabe and her daughters will be waiting to greet her at the finish line.

"She's strong and I'm proud of her."

All the proceeds from tonight's party benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation to help search for a cure.

This year, Little Rock's race has already raised over $2 million dollars.
