  • Henderson State Sanctions Fraternity after Alcohol Pois...
Reported by: Lauren Trager, KARK 4 News

    Thursday, Oct 15, 2009 @09:20pm CDT

Officials are cracking down on fraternity parties at Henderson State University after two students wind up in the hospital two weeks ago with alcohol poisoning.

One reportedly had a blood alcohol level almost five times the legal limit.

Greek life, for many college students, is an integral part of their school experience, a way to make friends and serve the community, but at Henderson State, some say things had gotten way out of hand.

It’s Thursday, party night at Henderson State University. While the Sigma Phi Epsilon house is quiet now, it was another story two weeks ago.

"When two people underage, especially, go to the hospital because they are way too drunk, then that's a problem," said Josh Briggs, editor of the Henderson State newspaper.

The party at the Sig Eps house still advertised on Facebook has now become the center of controversy here and officials say it’s time for a crackdown.

"There will be no open parties on our campus ever again, period," said Dean of Students Chad Fielding.

Fielding says the Sig Eps are facing sanctions. But he's enforcing policy for all social organizations now-no open invitations to parties with alcohol.

And fraternities and sororities here must now follow strict national guidelines-a policy in place at colleges across the country but one that often isn’t enforced.

"Our Greeks have to work on their image on campus, their image in the community, their community service, basically everything they are supposed to be about," Fielding said.

The president of this fraternity couldn't be reached for comment and no one answered the door at the house Thursday.

Students, though, have mixed reactions about whether tougher rules will actually take.

"I think all Greeks are going to look at this and say hey we can not mess up, so I think it’s going to work out good," Briggs said.

"Kids are going to be kids. I think the crackdown would be nice if it’s enforced but there's only so much that they can do and only so much the students are willing to do," said student Anna Seams.

"They can try, but it’s not going to happen,” said student Antonia Leak.

Henderson State says they will be more strictly enforcing the guidelines of the Fraternal Information and Programming Group. For more information about what rules these Greek organizations will have to follow click here.
