Reported by: Jancey Sheats, KARK 4 News Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 @04:30pm CDT According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
This weekend, thousands will gather in downtown Little Rock to bring awareness and raise money. It's the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Junior League of Little Rock is hosting a 6th K Cafe after the race this Saturday. You can drop by the Junior League building at 401 South Scott Street for brunch, mimosas and a fashion show. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are $15 and include free parking. Click here for more information. Survivor Story: For eleven years, she's the glue that's helped hold this organization together. As office manager for the Junior League of Little Rock, Christy Copeland handles the goings on of the league's more than 1,000 members. "You know, I do whatever I am called to do," she says. And while she's usually the problem solver and answer getter, last year it was Christy leaning on the league for support. "I have had more support from the women that I don't even know very well, because there are so many women in this organization," Copeland says. With hundreds of women in the league, the statistics caught up. In May of 2008, then 48-years-old, Christy found out she had breast cancer. "Panic. It is so overwhelming that you just don't really know what to ask right away because you are just grasping that oh my gosh, you have cancer," she recalls. Like many cases, Christy's doctor discovered the tumor during a routine mammogram. By that time, it had spread to her lymph nodes. "It was kind of hard to find because you couldn't feel it," she remembers. It was a battle that Christy was determined to win. She underwent four months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. Her inspiration, her husband and daughter. "I never stopped work. There were days that I didn't feel very well. It's just better to come to work and stay busy and do something positive so you don't feel so sick and miserable, like a victim," says Copeland. So far so good, Christy has been cancer free for almost a year. By sharing her story, she hopes to raise awareness of the importance of early screening. It's what saved her life and hopefully the lives of others. |
