  • Rabies Vaccination Schedules Could Change
Reported by: Pete Thompson, KARK 4 News

    Monday, Sep 21, 2009 @05:40pm CDT

    Pet-owners listen up!

Your pet may not have to undergo yearly rabies vaccinations anymore.

That's been the law in Arkansas since 1945, but some health experts say too many vaccinations cause health problems for pets.

Rabies vaccinations are still required, but what's being challenged is how often they are administered.

Veterinarians say there are studies that show frequent vaccinations can cause pets to develop tumors.

Rabies is still a deadly disease that is found in Arkansas. That’s one reason why the vaccine’s been required for pets every year.

"We've owned pets for 20 years,” says Megan Abbott, “We do it every year and I feel perfectly safe with that."

But State Representative Pam Adcock is a dog-lover who recently lost three healthy pets to clusters of tumors.

While she has no proof, based on her research, she believes repeated vaccinations caused their deaths.

"My gut feeling tells me that though I was doing my best,” she says, “I might have been doing something that was hurting them."

Arkansas is one of only two states that until recently required pets to get annual rabies vaccinations.

Most other states only require them every three years.

Arkansas revised its law this year after Adcock proposed a bill.

The State Board of Health may just allow the decision to be left up to veterinarians’ discretion.

But Adcock says after losing her own pets, the rule of “one vaccination every three years” needs to be enforced.

That bill will go to a rules committee in October.
