  • Flash Flooding in South Arkansas
    Reported by: KARK 4 News

    Friday, Sep 18, 2009 @02:35pm CDT

The heavy rain in South Arkansas on Thursday created some hazardous conditions late in the day and during the overnight hours.

In Calhoun County, an elderly couple had to be evacuated by sheriff's deputies when a flash flood brought four feet of water into their Locust Bayou home around 1:30 this morning.

A few hours earlier in Hampton, six inches of water was reported to be seeping into two homes on Highway 278, and sandbagging was needed to protect several more houses.

Earlier Thursday night, State Police reported that high water shutdown Highway 57 west of Stephens in Ouachita County. Troopers also said some county roads in the area had to be closed.

A flash flood was also reported south of Chidester in Ouachita County during the late afternoon.

The rain is expected to continue in parts of Arkansas tonight and tomorrow before finally leaving the state on Sunday.

KARK 4 Meteorologists Brett Cummins and Greg Dee say the nearly week-long wet weather has sent September 2009 into record rainfall territory. This month is one of the ten wettest Septembers on record, and at five locations around the state it was the wettest September ever recorded. With more than three months to go until year's end, Little Rock has already exceeded its average rainfall.
