Reported by: Jancey Sheats Thursday, Aug 13, 2009 @05:51pm CDT The state of Arkansas is hoping to save taxpayers a little cash.
Today, the Governor toured what will be the largest green building renovation in the state and the future home of five government agencies. And going green, means more money in your pocket. "It's kind of a win – win,” says Governor Beebe. “It's a win environmentally and it's a win for the tax payers because the state ends up spending less money on utility costs." The building, at 900 West Capitol, was originally constructed in 1941 for AT&T. It's most recent tenant, Dillards, moved out in the late 80's. Part of the twelve million dollar renovation includes energy efficient windows, low flow plumbing, and natural landscape irrigation using rainwater. The renovation must meet 29 of 59 possible points to receive LEED certification. "We get points for just recycling this building because this building was an existing building and we are totally reusing it in it's entire sense,” says project manager Jeff McNeil. “Then you get points." The building is also located near two forms of public transportation, CAT and the trolley, which means another point towards certification. Right now, the state is leasing the building. The Arkansas Building Authority will purchase it once the renovations are complete. The project should be finished by next spring and is being funded by federal stimulus money. |
