Reported by: Melissa Hayes, KARK 4 News Thursday, Jul 16, 2009 @09:48pm CDT Everyone seems to have a story about someone they know with cancer.
And when you think of the deadly disease, more often than not you think of more high-profile cases, like lung, prostate, or breast cancer. According to a recent study, thyroid cancer is the fastest growing form of cancer and doctors aren't exactly sure why. Based on national data, somewhere between one and one point five percent of Arkansans have thyroid cancer; that's about 45,000 people. Symptoms include a knot in the neck, hoarse voice, or problems swallowing. Thyroid experts previously thought they were doing more surgeries because they were doing better at detecting thyroid cancer. But that may not be all there is to it. The good news? Thyroid cancer is highly treatable. “We often say if there's a cancer we would pick this would be the one we pick,” Dr. Brendan Stack. “Because it tends to be a slower growing more indolent or less aggressive cancer.” Lung and breast cancer are on the decrease. Thyroid cancer has been on the increase for about 25 years, but more so in the past five years. |
