Reported by: RNS Newsroom Solutions, KARK 4 News Friday, May 15, 2009 @11:30am CDT As many as 1,200 GM dealers across the country are anxiously awaiting word from Detroit to find out if their contracts with the struggling automaker will get the axe.
Dealers nationwide will start learning Friday if they will be among those that will have their agreements with the auto manufacturer severed. It's not yet known if, or how many dealerships in Arkansas will be cut. GM hopes to reduce its U.S. dealer count to about 26-hundred of its roughly 62-hundred U.S. dealerships by the end of next year as it restructures. The Arkansas Automobile Dealers Association shared with KARK 4 a copy of the letter GM is sending out to the dealers whose contracts are being cut. It reads in part, "This letter is being delivered to (dealership's name here) to meet the committment we made to communicate to dealers during the week of May 11th concerning our restructuring efforts." "In our planning, we have identified those attributes that GM dealers must have to be a successful part of the dealer network going forward. We also reviewed historical performance factors such as sales effectiveness, sales volume, CSI performance, capitalization, profitability, location, facilities, and dualing patterns, among other market factors." "We have conducted an analysis of your dealership's operations and market. We now are providing you with our current planning regarding your dealership in connection with our dealer network plans, in the spirit of open and candid communication." "Based on our review and current and forseeable market conditions and your dealership's historical performance, we do not see that GM can have a productive business relationship with (dealership's name here) over the long term." "Please understand that our planning in this regard is not finalized, and we are prepared to give you until the end of the month to submit any information you would like to us." Click here to read the entire letter. Just yesterday, Chrysler publicly identified the 789 dealerships it has targeted for closure as part of its bankruptcy filing. Eight of those are in Arkansas: Cook Jeep Chrysler in Little Rock Crain Chrysler in Little Rock Malvern Chrysler Dodge Jeep ALS Incorporated in Springdale Jim Bryant Motors in Springdale Bob Carver's Cars & Trucks in Mena Jones Brothers Auto Inc. in Harrison Louis George Motor Co. in Osceola.. Meanwhile, GM is avoiding bankruptcy by using more than 15-billion-dollars in federal government loans. The company must restructure its debt by June 1st or face bankruptcy. Henderson has previously said that bankruptcy was, quote, "more probable than not." |
