  • A Question of Faith?
Reported by: Courtney Collins, KARK 4 News

    Thursday, Apr 9, 2009 @04:30pm CDT

Easter Sunday may be right around the corner, but according to a new poll, fewer and fewer people are turning to God for answers.

According to a Newsweek poll, back in 1994, when asked whether faith can help fix our country's problems... 64% of people said "yes."

When that same question was asked today, the "yes's" dropped to an all time low, 48%.

In Arkansas, you don't have to drive far to come across a church.

But according to a Newsweek poll, more and more people are at a crossroads when it comes to applying their faith.

"I think it can right the wrongs of individuals and their lives, I don't think it can fix the country. I'm pretty liberal,” says Melanie Grawl.

Church leaders in Little Rock say people just aren't exposed to religion the way they used to be.

"All you gotta do is look at the television shows, commercials and all those things. A lot of those things can pull us away from a foundation that God wants us to have,” says Bishop Steven Arnold with St. Mark Baptist Church.

But overall, Bishop Arnold says Arkansas is an exception.

He says living in the Bible Belt still means something.

"I think we still rely on God, just last year we added over 500 people to our membership."

Bishop Arnold is quick to point out that god played a major role in establishing America, but he feels faith and personal responsibility are equally important when it comes to moving our country forward.

"The bible tells us to acknowledge God in all we do, to seek him first and all these other things will be added. God plays an important role in our lives but we also have our own responsibility to do as it relates to working together with God."

And despite what the poll shows, some people just aren't buying it.

"I'm surprised by the poll, because I think more people are spiritually aware today than they were in the 90s,” says Sam Billingsley.
