  • Update: Police Say Pearcy Murder Suspect Killed in Shoo...
    Reported by: KARK 4 News

    Thursday, Nov 12, 2009 @02:30pm CST

Update: Garland County Sheriff’s deputies have killed a man they say was behind five murders that happened in Pearcy back on November 12th. They say sometime Thursday evening police got word the suspect from the homicides and fire was held up at the former Rodeway Inn which is now called the National Park Inn in Hot Springs. When they arrived along with the State Police, Hot Springs Police and F.B.I. they say the man opened fire hitting two officers. One is in serious injury the other officer has been treated and released. Police returned fire fatal injuring the suspect who’s name is not being released at this time. The names of the officers are also not being released. From Friday, November 13th: (Garland County, AR) One of five people found dead this morning in the Garland County town of Pearcy has been identified by authorities.

The Garland County Sheriff's Department says Edward Earl Gentry, Sr., 80, was the 5th victim found today in a separate home (but on the same property) from where four other bodies were discovered after a mobile home fire. [See photos below].

Gentry's body was found hours after the other four were discovered inside the burned double wide mobile home at 3450 Old Airport Road. Fire crews were called to the scene around 2:30.

Deputies say neither Gentry's home nor his body were burned, but his cause of death is unknown.

Earlier this morning, KARK 4 News learned that a truck registered to the address of the burned home was found on fire miles away in Hot Springs moments before the blaze at the home was reported.

The names of the other four victims are not yet being released, but information from the scene indicates most of them were from the same family. A woman on the scene told KARK 4's Lauren Lea that the victims were her aunt, uncle, a cousin and the cousin's girlfriend. The uncle's father, she says, was the victim found in the home near the burned mobile home.

The fire scene is just down the street from Lake Hamilton High School. Crews remain on the scene and the investigation is only beginning.

Officials say it's not yet known how the fire started or how the victims died.

The bodies have been taken to the State Crime Lab to determine their identities and cause of death.

Lt. James Martin, the Garland County Sheriff's Department's Public Information Officer told CNN the following this morning:

“There was a suspicious fire with 4 bodies and the identities are unknown.”

When asked if the bodies are hard to identify at this point because of the fire, Lt. Martin said, "Yes it’s because of the fire.  We have no idea who they are at this point.  A 5th person was found short time ago in a separate residence on the same property that was not burned.”

Lt. Martin says the home where the fifth body was found was not burned.  As for whether or not there was a gunshot wound or any other identifiable manner or cause of death or injury, Lt. Martin says “at this point I have no idea” how the person died.  “All I know is we’ve got a 5th.”

When asked about the burned found in Hot Springs, Lt. Martin says it’s “a vehicle registered to the house where the house fire was at. And the vehicle was on fire. There was nobody in the car. It was located inside city limits on Davidson Drive, about 15 to 20 miles from location of house fire.”

Lt. Martin says deputies are unable to determine at this point whether the 4 burned bodies are men, women or adults.  He did say that the 5th body is an adult male.

Lt. Martin does not believe that officers have ever been called to this residence due to a domestic disturbance, but he says authorities have been there before but he believes it was when previous tenants lived there.
